Aeroponic Veggie's For High Rise Apartment Living.
The value of home grown produce is in the experience, from selecting seeds, watering them, watching them grow, anticipating their size and numbers, discussing tips and tricks, picking them just at the right moment, cooking great food with them, and sharing them with others. Alimento , Spanish for "food / nourishment" is a means of cultivating your own herbs, fruits and vegetables whith in the high-rise mega city context of 2050. Extensive scenario building was carried out to derive an empathy for the needs, wants , and aspirations of people living within this context. The design aim was to create a product which had aesthetic appeal, character, innovative technology, but most of all did not dumb down the experience of "growing your own".
Aeroponics is one of the most technical methods of hydroponics. The growth medium is a nutrient enriched air through water vapour. Roots hang from the top surface and are sprayed periodically to keep them from drying out and to deliver nutrients for growth. A hydroponic garden uses a fraction of the water that a soil garden does because no water is wasted or consumed by weeds. Due to a lack of soil, all soil borne diseases are eliminated and a year round growth
Alimento, is a scaleable appliance consisting of up to 9 aeroponic pods, a top cap and base unit which houses the water reservoir, central pumping system and accepts the nutrient block and water top up's through a small access door. The Alimento's modular approach provides flexibility in volume and effort, making it a suitable appliance for the likes of both a growing family or even a single apartment owner.
